I had an older version of Mirror (1.2.0) and I upgraded to newer version. After upgrade, my journal entries are missing media files. How to fix it?

Because of the recent restrictions imposed by Google on file access in SD card/storage, Mirror no longer saves the media files in the sd card/internal storage folder. Now there are specific folders where the app always have access and to support new Android versions, Mirror app have moved the media files to the location where it will always have access to these files.

Because of the above change, ONLY if you are updating from an older version (1.2.0) of mirror, you might have to help Mirror app explicitly link the media files ONCE after the upgrade. Post the linking everything will work as usual.

This is required because in the older version of Mirror, the backup did not include the media file unlike the current version. The newer android versions provides only restricted access to internal storage to apps and requires explicit user permission to access them.

So the Mirror app will need explicit access (granted by the user) to access the "Mirror" folder (which was used by the older 1.2.0 version of Mirror) to copy all the media files to the new location.

Please follow the below steps to fix the media links post upgrade from 1.2.0 to any version greater than or equal to 2.0.0

  1. Open Mirror app, click the hamburger menu and got to "Settings"
  2. In the "Settings", click "Advanced" and click "Fix media links"
  3. Mirror app will show how many media files are having invalid links
  4. Click on "Select" button to select the Mirror folder (which was used by the older 1.2.0 version of Mirror)
  5. Mirror folder is usually located in the root of SD Card or internal storage with name "Mirror". This is where all the media files are located
  6. Now, the Mirror app will need explicit permission from you to read this folder and copy all the media files to the new accessible location used by the current version of Mirror app
  7. Mirror app will ask permission to access the "Mirror" folder. Click on "Allow"
  8. If the app finds unlinked files to be copied, it will display "[X] media files matched"
  9. Click "Fix It" to fix the media links. The Mirror app will then copy your media files to the required location
  10. After this, you should be able to see your pictures and voice notes without any issues in your journal entries

I had backed up the Mirror folder used by the older version of Mirror (1.2.0). Can I use this folder to restore my entries in the newer version?

Yes. Mirror supports restore from an older restore file (DBBK), if your Mirror folder has it in the Backup folder. You will be able to restore the journal entries. The restoring of media files associated to these entries will require bit of manual intervention because of the recent changes made by Google on handling SD card files.

  1. First, make sure that the Mirror folder is available in the device where you have installed the new version of mirror.
  2. Now, follow the steps mentioned in the FAQ question: "How to restore Journal entries from a backup?". This will make sure your journal entries are restored
  3. To restore the media files, you need to use the "Fix Media Links" feature. The detailed steps are mentioned in the FAQ question: "I had an older version of Mirror (1.2.0) and I upgraded to newer version. After upgrade, my journal entries are missing media files. How to fix it?". This will make sure the media files are restored as well
Why is the weather information sometimes not added to my journal entries?

We use OpenWeatherMaps API to get the weather information for your location. Since we have availed for a free plan, weather information retrieval is subject to Weather API traffic limits. Only a limited number of (free) requests per minute are allowed by the weather API. If too many users have added the journal entry around the same time, it is possible that some of the users might not get the weather information.

We would love to hear from you!
